2002 Domaine Tempier Bandol 375ml

I don't think there are many Domaines more famous in Bandol than Domaine Tempier, and after reading about them many times and having visited their Domaine (sadly after closing time) it was hard not to try this wine. Becoming ever more common on wine lists in Melbourne, I definitely recommend searching for this producer. This wine is made from Mourvedre, one of the blending partners gaining more press and popularity with its two bedfellows, Shiraz and Grenache, but it is in Bandol that this wine really excels. It is delicate and perfumed with barnyard aromas and ripe red fruits, good acidity, nice complexity and slightly bretty. It is spicy and medium weight, it has so many qualities you would expect from medium weight Pinots, yet rarely see. It has an "old world-ness" about it that is impossible to ignore and for me made it entirely alluring. I bought this in a restaurant for $50, so expect to pay around $35 or more in a bottle shop.
