I

2004 La Bastide Saint Dominique Cotes Du Rhone

I always have a picture of the wine I want to smell when I have read the label, the good ones match it, the bad ones don't and the amazing paint me something new. This matches my picture. There are dried fruits, hay, some developing fruit smells, barnyard influences, earth, cedar and other good stuff. Stuff, being tobacco and leather, which comes through more so on the palate. The wine is quite astringent, like a good eggplant and it needs some food to soften it, but the nose has already won me over. After less than 5 minutes open the fruit begins to emerge, I like this wine. It is more expensive than the other two, but only by two dollars, so why wouldn't you try it. Rhone wine, despite, the impression that red wines should be big, are elegant and spicy, the Grenache grape often dominates, which offers peppery and raspberry qualities. I don't know why it is named after Sainte Dominique, nor why it seems he was a bastard, but incorrect translation aside I do like this wine and would be happiest eating something with it.
