| 2004 Silverwings Vincent O.V Mourvedre Shiraz
This is not a label you are likely to see in bottle shops, but Melbourne restaurants may well already stock it, and if you see it on the list, I think you'll be pleased if you buy it. It is a blend of 60% Mourvedre (Mataro) and 40% Shiraz and offers lovely rich, dark fruit and sweet lashings of American oak. "Lashings" makes it sound over the top, but it is not, the wine is well balanced, and the oak tends to offer, or work well with, the richer mouth feel that this wine has. The palate is long and there are nice tannins to balance the generous fruit and refreshing acidity. It is a lovely bottle of wine and very rewarding for the price, which depending which restaurant you are in will be around the $50 mark. Silverwings is made by ex Cleveland wine maker Keith Brien, so as you would expect his handling of fruit and attention to detail are terrific, and working with such good fruit helps too.
