2004 Tatachilla Partners Shiraz Cabernet

Cabernet Shiraz is the Australian blend, a little bit like 'Crowded House' and 'Pavlova'. Although we find greatest affinity with the Shiraz grape on its own, it is the rare marriage of these two grapes that is a true Australianism. I should add that it is Cabernet Sauvignon most commonly paired with Shiraz, although I wouldn't be surprised if the odd batch of Cabernet Franc or Ruby Cabernet had graced the insides of a bottle or two. This wine has quite an olfactory presence. It is as if a fountain of different fruits has hit you square in the face. There is cherry, raspberries, and blackberry jam. On the palate it is equally replete with fruit and there is a softness in the mouth where the flavour of the Cabernet lingers longest and tends to dominate. This makes sense, for with any variety listed on the label, the name that comes first should suggest the most dominant grape, as this Cabernet Shiraz demonstrates, there is more Cabernet in the blend. Very rewarding, very impressive, and cheap. This would retail for around $15, and even less in some places.
