2005 Chalmers Sagrantino

I am so impressed by the wines from Chalmers that since the Chalmers Vermentino review, it has been all I could do to suppress my enthusiasm and so I now feel I have waited an appropriate amount of time to do another. The Chalmers Sagrantino is made from the Sagrantino grape...yes, it is a grape, I'd not heard of it either. It hails from the region of Umbria, which is kind of squashed between Tuscany and Marche and if you can imagine a mid point in something the shape of a boot, that is where it is. I won't repeat my extraordinary surprise at how good the Chalmers wines from the Murray Darling of all places are, but let's just say I'm still blown away. This wine has a wonderful savoury nose and the soft, subtle spice and meatiness defy its humble origins. The texture is lithe and elegant, with wonderful acidity and a good hint of oak. There are really pretty and ripe red fruits offering some liquorice, with a bit of plum without channelling anything to do with Merlot, and some lovely red petal smells too. What I like about this wine (if I hadn't made myself clear enough) is it is such a wonderful expression of savoury yet ripe fruit and it is a well-balanced wine. Expect to pay around $22 retail for this stunner.
