| 2005 Evelyn County Estate Black Paddock Chardonnay
I don't know why I haven't reviewed more Chardonnay, I really like it, in all its forms, so this year I will make an effort to remedy that situation. This is an unknown producer to me, grown and made in the Yarra Valley in Victoria. The wine is bright and smells a little sulphurous at first, but that should blow off. The emerging fruit is tight and lean, but the flavours suggest hidden complexity, each sniff offering something new. Five minutes in the glass, and there are notes of ripe peach and cashew nuts, cinnamon and a stoniness, really quite pleasing. The wine has a silky mouth feel, but that sulphur is still hanging around and tends to dominate. Despite that, I think this is a winery worth looking at more closely, and I look forward to seeing their current vintages. I picked this up for $14.
