| 2005 Pyren Vineyard Broken Quartz Shiraz
This wine is surprising as usually entry level Shiraz are either lifeless or ugly fruit bombs. This is neither. The 2005 Pyren has a wonderfully fresh lift to it, I'm reminded of lipstick, but I don't want that to mean bad, it is violet and perfumed and has crunchy acidity, a little overt to be honest, but it would be great with a bit of food. That acidity will really keep it fresh and give it the ability to age too. There is really obvious raspberry fruit in the mouth, which is great, the nose is earthy, with licorice and char, pretty interesting for a wine that will cost about $18. I think it will really open up and I'm going to let it. I'll be back... The fruit continued to open up, but there was a hardness to it that really did need some food to help soften it, over all pretty smart though. I'll be keeping some in my cellar that's for sure.
