2005 Wedgetail Estate Shiraz

Shiraz from the Yarra Valley is really something to keep an eye out for - I am becoming particularly fond of it. I must admit that I have a slight preference for cool climate style Shiraz, so if you read this and only like to drink fruit bombs, you may be disappointed. This wine has a gorgeous, leathery, dark cherry colour to it and the nose, while tight at first, really opens up. To me this is like Crozes Hermitage; hidden liquorice, graphite, black olives, spice and pencil shavings all muddled together with ripe, beautiful fruit. It has fine tannins and a vibrant spiciness which I really like, plus good acidity and nice savoury oak. As Phil Collins sings in Invisible Touch, "...and now it seems, I'm falling, falling for her!" Go and buy some, you won't regret it, and it will cost around about $45.
