I like the simple expression of the grapes in this wine being referred to as The Red. Closer inspection of the back label reveals Shiraz and Merlot as the blending partners, likened to the odd couple by the winemaker. The wine itself is expressive and elegant, showing a nice balance between red and black fruits, savouriness and a touch of eucalypt, which I'm attributing to the Merlot. Made by the son of Julian Castagna in Beechworth, the wine has elements of both varieties showing through from plums through to pepper and fine gentle tannins and nice acidity. This medium bodied wine should retail for around the $35-40 mark, depending on where you shop, and offers great value for money and interest.
