I

2006 Cambrian La Pleiade Shiraz

There is a shockingly purple hue when the wine is poured out. The bubbles that settle from the gentle agitation of the drop from the bottle to the glass are deep and ominous, like the colour has been drawn from the belly of a printing press. The nose is full, black fruits, liquorice and sweet oak wafts. The palate is intense and powerful, the tannins pulled my cheeks inward like a can under the foot of a frustrated teen. The wine coated my mouth with its supreme phenolic weight and allowed the second much-anticipated sip to feel almost plush and generous, as indeed the wine is. The colour is hauntingly pure and heavy. The palate shows more black strap liquorice and wild brambly fruits, pips and juice, nothing has been left out of this wine. It needs great acid and it has it, if it didn't, the wine would suffer terribly. Decant it, revere it, do what you like, but most importantly, find some and drink it! Expect to pay around $75+ for this extraordinary and rare wine.
