Made by Phillip Lobley near Yea in Victoria, this is a unique kind of Merlot, a Merlot that tastes as Merlot should. I am pretty hard on Merlot, it has suffered by becoming the soft and fluffy wine with no stuffing, and that is a shame. This Merlot has nice red and black fruits, it is elegant and shows concentration at the same time, but it is not jammy. Lovely fine tannins, good acidity and my favourite, leathery, dark cherry skin flavour and sweet perfume. This is a very small producer who makes a Merlot better than most of I have seen and the retail price will be about $20. If you like "real Merlot", that is, a wine with integrity, good fruit expression and nice structure, then ask your local bottle shop to get some of this in.
