I

2006 Magpie Estate 'The Schnell' Shiraz Grenache

I always like finding "entry level" red wines that have a lot of character and flavour, and don't just taste like a beverage closely associated to wine (in my opinion, white wines at lower price points often offer better value - mainly because they don't need as much handling). This red wine is one of those great finds, and delivers terrific fruit expression and freshness. 'The Schnell' from Magpie Estate has a beautiful lifted nose of ripe berries, dark plums and American oak; it has a deep red almost purple colour, and is particularly fragrant. It has good cleaning acidity to stop your palate getting weighed down, and creamy mouth feel with pleasant short tannins and a touch of cinnamon. This is, to use one of my least favourite words, a terrific quaffer!!  I've found in my time in the industry that people use that word to excuse wines that are essentially rubbish - this is certainly not the case with this wine. To think that this wines costs about $16 is amazing! Seek it out where you can, obviously it is available by contacting us, or smaller retail shops should be able to find it for you. As it says on the label - Schnell! Schnell!
