The people's choice award goes, without question, to this grape variety - Sauvignon Blanc. There is daylight between it and second place, fought over intermittently by new vogue wines with names like Pinot Grigio, or Viognier, or more encouragingly Riesling. Sauvignon Blanc, with its unmistakably profound aroma and kaleidoscope of tropical fruits, seems to effortlessly produce wines of varietal accuracy, much to the enjoyment of so many people. The Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc is perhaps a little less obviously fruit driven, its nose is spicier and nettle like, tending towards grassiness. It has lots of bright generous fruit and a steely and rigid acidity that holds together the concentrated flavours. In my opinion this is a complex wine, at the same time being very easily approachable and user friendly. It has precision of flavour, intensity and tastes like it should, very fresh very lively, very good indeed. For a shade over 25 dollars, this would quite happily take its place in the door of my fridge any day. Find it at your local bottle shop or send me an email to have some delivered to your door.
