Let me first say that I was in Bannockburn during the harvest of this wine, I even lent my hand to the odd batch of
Pigeage and my feet to a few fruit bins destined for the press. While even though most in the industry would lay claim to being part of the winemaking talent behind such wines following such inclusion, I admit to this only to help explain that I have a connection with the product, which I happen to think is fantastic. So read on, with or without caution, knowing my involvement, and hopefully when you try the wine for yourself, you feel about is the same way I do.
Nick Farr has made another classic Pinot Noir from their site in Bannockburn north-west of Geelong. Despite the heat of summer, seasonal frosts and whatnot, the house of Farr is still well and truly intact with this new release Pinot Noir. The nose is fine and savoury full of sour cherry and fresh sage, which develops into earthy charry notes and even hints of pepper spice. The mouth feel is tight, the high natural acidity offers terrific cut and the fine tannins from top quality French oak show cinnamon and nutmeg. This is a wine destined for the cellar, despite its terrific offering now; the real magic will show after some time in the cellar. It retails for around $45 and if you can find an equivalent priced Burgundy offering as much as this, then I suggest you buy it. This is well and truly at the top of the tree when it comes to New World Pinot Noir.
