2007 Kumeu Village Chardonnay

I know I can go on at times about the greatness of wines, but some winemakers can just do it right. This is a $20 bottle of wine, yet it takes you to a place where the wine costs so much more. I talk of Burgundy and its awe inspiring white wines. New Zealand is nowhere near it geographically, yet this cheap Kiwi Chardonnay may as well of been born just outside of Beaune. It has a mineral nose, a flash of sulphurous stink, which tends to elicit murmurs of Meursault, and then the fruit shows more fullness, oatmeal and a drip of honey. I'm excited by it and it hasn't yet left the glass. Tight on the palate, delivering taut acidity that lingers between my cheeks and teeth, and such a clean, fine expression of the fruit that reeks of white Burgundy and defines great value for money.
