2007 Life of Riley Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is famous for making bracing wines in the Loire Valley, and also for the grape's ability to be made in many different styles. It also is one of the few grape varieties that offers decades of ageability, if made well. For me, the New World examples have been a little under-whelming, with only a few exceptions - like this wine. This Western Australian offered a nice sense of ripe fruit, bordering on tropical, but remaining defined by a mineral base, and then there was that 'Chenin' flavour. The flavour of the grape is hard to describe, historically lanolin is its tell tale flag, and it is in this wine, but it seems more mysterious and I really liked it. It has good acidity, another hallmark of this grape variety, it was clean and fresh and very enjoyable indeed. More good news is that it should hit your fridge for less than $20.
