| 2008 Cascabel Roussanne Viognier
As an Australian take on a Rhone Valley white, the Cascabel combines two grapes that are not often seen together, and so I was looking for a rich, almost luscious wine. I was met however with something much leaner and tighter, a wine I want to look at again in about six months. I was reminded of lemon sherbet and lime cordial, it was quite pleasant though not what I wanted from this wine. Looking at the wine after it was open for a few hours, the Viognier component was showing more fruit, faint apricot, and white flower, the linear nature of Roussanne doing most of the structural work. I am looking forward to watching its evolution however, and hopefully seeing more nuts and dried fruit character even blossom. I recommend this wine, at the moment it has more in common with Riesling, but Cascabel makes terrific wine and I expect this one to really open up, and you should be able to buy some for about $24.
