2008 Chalmers Vermentino

It is not often that I am left somewhat speechless in the presence of wine, I love it when it happens but sadly most wines are 'ok' or 'good', but not 'jaw dropping'. The Chalmers Vermentino however is a wine that had me lost for words. This little known (in Australia) variety from the Murray Darling region, of all places, is full of crisp acidity, lean and fresh apple and pear notes, vegetal and herbal flavours and some tropical notes as well (I couldn't find an easy way to incorporate minerality in that sentence but it is there too!). It is refreshing and light and delightful, the kind of wine that makes me want to sing "groove is in the heart", that terribly addictive song by Dee Light. I want more of this wine right now. To put this in perspective, the Murray Darling is to wine growing regions, as a sow's ear is to a silk purse, and I'd be lying if I didn't acknowledge that as one of the reasons this wine made me blink. If you have ever enjoyed an Italian wine, then go and buy some of this. If you have ever enjoyed wine at all, go and buy this...now! It should cost you about $20 at most.
