2008 Rosemount O White Wine

I must admit I've been intrigued by this marketing gimmick and I find myself cringing, whilst eagerly awaiting the tasting. I imagine a wine designed to be drunk with ice to be like some kind of cordial, but word on the street is that it is merely super ripe grapes and has nothing to do with Cottee's at all. I also didn't expect it to be bubbly, so that is an added bonus. I am determined to drink it without ice first to see what on earth this mystery beverage is, though a quick Google search tells me the grapes it uses are Muscat Gordo and White Frontignac, both generous cropping grape varieties that often find themselves in fortified wines. Then, in the much-loved tradition of taking one for the team, I drink it. One review I read mentioned how the team at Rosemount had "magically" been able to make the special bubbles last when the drink is over ice, although I'd never noticed a bubble deficit issue in Coke, or any other non-magically enhanced bubbly drinks. I pressed on, cringe still fully intact. The nose is full of flowers in bloom, lychees, perfume and musk, really quite pretty, the palate is not thick like I imagined, but certainly has a slight viscosity and heaps of acidity to balance such sweetness. A tingling bead, "magic" even, fills the mouth as the fresh grape flavours linger longer than expected leaving a slight grassiness. Now for the ice - it is surprisingly pleasant. With only 8% alcohol which is a nice change, I'm left thinking it's a unique cross between Sauvignon Blanc and Moscato, and has really good length for something intended to be so simple. I love that this is intended to refresh, but I believe that should be the role of all wines, not just those bridging the 'Ready to Drink' gap. Over all, it is quite pleasant, but I'd rather a nice glass of Riesling.
