2011 Caillard Mataro, Barossa Valley

This wine delivers sweet spice – cinnamon, cardamom- black strap licorice, intense raspberry and a flash of mint. It might not be mint but it’s high pitched maybe more aniseed based. I drink some more. The wine appears a little hot, yet the aromatics and brightness of the fruit easily make up for it. When you are not drinking Shiraz or Pinot or another easily identifiable variety, there is the ever present need to give it a home.  So, in the interests of putting this wine in a box, I’d say a delicious crianza-esque Iberian styled slurp-able bottle of wine. Bring pork, bring friends, bring glasses. RRRP $45
