Nicolas Carmarans Mauvais Temps, Aveyron, France

I bought this blind. I asked a friend who has a small wine business to send me a dozen wines. (www.onepallet.com.au) All I know is that many of them are Biodynamic, Organic and Natural. I’m not totally convinced by these wines, hence my desire to drink more of them.  The Mauvais Temps is made from two grapes* I’ve only read about, and Cab Sauv and Cab Franc, although neither of these Cabs are in amounts that make them stick out. The wine has a smokey look to it, that little haze, but otherwise bright with good colour. The nose is what I’ll remember. It is wonderfully perfumed, showing all the lovely seductive elements that pinot of shiraz with whole bunch could give, it is truly evocative. There is bubblegum, sweet flowers, fresh spices and something I can’t put my finger on. It is also 11.5%. This is far and away the freshest red wine I have ever had, it’s like cranberry juice but beautiful ( when I say fresh, I mean, get something fatty to eat with it, otherwise the acid will tear you in half). It challenges what I think red wine is, it challenges what I think ripe wine should be, but it makes me want to put it in my mouth. RRRP $35
